School Readiness Checklist

Educational checklist to help parents reflect on K1, K2 and Primary 1 school readiness across self-care, attention, social and pre-academic skills. Non-diagnostic.

School readiness is broader than reading or writing. This educational checklist helps you reflect across self-care, attention, social skills and emotional regulation ahead of K1, K2 or Primary 1. It is non-diagnostic.

  1. Step 1

    Self-care

Toilet independence, dressing, eating, managing a water bottle and bag.

  2. Step 2

    Attention and listening

Can your child sit and listen in a small group for a short activity?

  3. Step 3

    Peer play

Turn-taking, sharing, joining a group, coping with disagreements.

  4. Step 4

    Language and following instructions

Understanding classroom instructions and asking for help when needed.

  5. Step 5

    Pre-academic exposure

Curiosity about letters, numbers, drawing and books — not formal skills, but interest.

  6. Step 6

    Emotional regulation

Coping with separation, transitions and small disappointments.

Common questions

My child is not reading yet — is that a problem?
Not on its own. Readiness is about the whole picture, not one skill.
Should we delay school entry?
A developmental review can help think this through with you rather than deciding alone.
